Karen Angela Klingbiel, principal of Atelier for Textile Conservation, established 2005 in Dresden, Germany, was recruited by the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland Ohio, USA (1994 to 1998), after completing her training at the Abegg Foundation in Switzerland. After her tenure at the Museum she founded and headed Textile Conservation & Consulting, Inc. in Madison, Ohio, USA (1998 to 2004).


Karen earned a B.A from The University of Michigan before her training as a textile conservator at the Abegg Foundation in Riggisberg, Switzerland from 1991-1994, under the guidance of Mechtild Flury-Lemberg. In addition to her work in conservation, Karen A. Klingbiel has earned a second degree in chemistry and physics and awarded Phi Beta Kappa at Lakeland College in Mentor, Ohio. She was subsequently acknowledged with an award from the American Chemical Society for Outstanding Work in Chemistry in 2003.

     

Karen A. Klingbiel gives lectures, tours and talks on ancient and historic textiles.

In addition to Karen A. Klingbiel’s work in conservation, she dedicates much time through volunteer work in the field of veterinary medicine and hospice care.

The robe was offered to and purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art and appeared in the exhibition “When Silk Was Gold”. The Conservation Report: “A Burial Robe from a Liao Tomb in Northeastern China”.(Copyright 1996, unpublished) The report includes a reconstruction analysis of the original garment based on physical information contained in the textile.
